So often at weddings, fragrance is something that’s completely neglected. Couples will spend hours deliberating over music, food, lighting and floral arrangements yet forget all about the importance of smell. Research has shown that scent is the quickest trigger for memories and emotions so it makes sense to incorporate this into a day you want to remember forever.

There are so many different ways to incorporate fragrance into your wedding from placing scented candles around your venue (our favourite are Diptyque) to putting a drop of fragrance on your invitations (be sure to do a spot check first). We also love the gorgeous English Roses available from The Real Flower company whose stunning flowers will fill your ceremony and reception space with a delicious fragrance. These days you can even get your hands on amazing scent machines which spray bursts of fragrance throughout the evening. Unbelievably Scent Air has over 1,500 different scents to choose from and will even evaluate the flowers in your bouquet in order to pick out complimentary notes. We love the idea of changing the scent as you move between your wedding breakfast and evening reception to really mark the change in atmosphere and add another dimension to the day.

Another great way to ensure your fragrance leaves its mark is to concoct a signature perfume just for your big day. The lovely people at Jo Malone encourage you to find your ‘little black dress’ fragrance by layering their different essences to create something special and unique whilst The Perfume Studio allow you to create an entirely bespoke fragrance and will even host a ‘Perfume Party’ in your living room! A great hen party option.

So go ahead, add another dimension to your celebrations and put some thought into your wedding fragrance.

Last week the company were kind enough to send me a sample bouquet and boy, are these things amazing! Big and blousy the traditional English roses are perfect for a vintage style wedding or if you’re looking for a peony alternative. To top things off, the scent that comes from the roses is jaw-dropping and compared to unscented flowers feels like you’re getting 2 for the price of 1! Here’s a couple of pictures, shame you can’t convey smell through a computer screen!

We’re always on the look out for talented new suppliers so when Marianne at Sweet Pea contacted us to ask whether we’d like to come and see her portfolio, we jumped at the chance. Just like us, Marianne is passionate about stylish and unique weddings and we just love her soft, feminine style and how she uses texture to such great effect. Her designs look good enough to eat!

For Mother’s Day Sweet Pea are holding two flower arranging classes, perfect if you’re looking to do something with your mum that’s a little bit different. The classes are taking place at the fabulous Seven Dials in Covent Garden, London and are great value at £50 per person. Each workshop will cover essential flower arranging tips and also give you the chance to create a beautiful spring arrangement. The session will then finish up with tea and cake, my favourite! Contact Sweet Pea to find our more or to book your place.

So next for the floral details. Libby and David’s entire wedding was beautifully understated (Meg would definitely approve) and a professional florist didn’t go anywhere near the celebration. My super talented cousin arranged the bouquets and the cake topper whilst my equally creative and talented aunt made the bridesmaid’s gowns and arranged the church pedestal. All the flowers were bought from the flower market whilst the table centers were miniature ‘trees’ from Ikea decorated with tiny sparkling beads (sorry no picture I’m afraid, my photography skills just didn’t cut it!).

The bloom works so well here because the bride and groom have carefully contrasted the delicate almost ‘fussy’ gypsophila with beautiful clean lines elsewhere in the wedding. The bride’s simple a-line dress with beautiful crystal detailing works perfectly against the complex detail of the Gypsophila and creates an almost ethereal feel.

And the absolute BEST thing about it all…Gypsophila is super cheap. Super doper cheap. So you could have dozens and dozens of floral arrangements and keep well within a small budget. That’s a real winner in my book!

Today we’re featuring one of my absolute favourite British suppliers, The Real Flower Company. This amazing company grow the most beautiful roses I have ever seen and their big, blousy blooms never fail to make my heart skip a beat!
Based in Hampshire, the company have championed the use of scented flowers, something that sadly, seems to have been forgotten by most commercial growers. The company have also pioneered the use of scented herbs such as lavender, mint and oregano in arrangements. All in all making for the most beautiful, perfumed arrangements I have ever seen.
Scent and aroma is something which is rarely considered at weddings, however having worked with these beautiful blooms, I can really say that they add an extra dimension to celebrations.
If you’re not located in the Southeast don’t fret! The company offer trade sales and will happily work with your florist to create the wedding flowers of your dreams.
